In 1922 voters approved a $5 million bond issue to build new streets and highways; this led to rapid growth in downtown businesses including Sears Roebuck & Company (later Sears Holdings) (now Kmart), JCPenney (now Macy's), Ford Motor Company (later Mercury), Boeing Aircraft Corporation (today Lockheed Martin), Northwest Airlines (now Alaska Airlines) and many other large companies that moved into or expanded into downtown during this time period including Amazon Web Services Inc., Starbucks Coffee Co., Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Costco Wholesale Shopping Center LLC - now Capital One Financial - AIG Incorporated Safeway plc.), Kaiser Permanente Hospitality corp.), Costco Wholesale Shopping Center LLC - now Capital One Financial - AIGInc.) In recent decades some major retail stores have left or closed down: Sears Roebuck & Company closed its doors in 2002 after 40 years growning sales from $10 billion to over $30 billion however Kmart has continued to grow until it currently employs about 60% of all workers at mall with over 1 million square feet floor space . Microsoft pulled out of Downtown Seattle due largely to rent hikes but reoccupied Redmond instead where they continue today as part of Satya Nadella’s plan called “Azure Workspace” which will see them employ close to 100K people around Bellevue Square while Apple continues operations at their old campus near Pioneer Square
