West Richland is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,524 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and is home to West Richland High School and the West Richland Community College. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Richland were fur traders in the early 1800s. The name "WestRichland" was given by Captain John Bainbridge during his 1807 voyage through Puget Sound on his way from British North America to Japan. Bainbridge had named many places near present-day Tacoma after himself - including Vancouver Island (present-day Victoria), Admiralty Inlet (present-day Gig Harbor), and Chehalis River (present-day Olympia). In 1875, David Griffiths platted what became West Richland on land he had purchased from Wai'anae tribe member Ahia'ilaua for $10.00 USD. In 1886, the town was moved from its original location two miles east of its current site due to flooding caused by heavy rains in nearby Lake Union. The new location allowed for more efficient water usage and less need for an additional road or street system within the community. During World War II, residents of West Richland helped produce food that fed troops stationed in nearby Seattle and Everett while they fought overseas. After the war, many local businesses grew up around production areas such as poultry processing, engineering services, chemical manufacturing, automotive parts and parts assembly plants; as well as retail stores catering to military personnel and their families stationed throughout Western Washington during peacetime until base closures in 2003 led to a loss of jobs statewide. At one time or another since 1975 there have been over 100 churches in or near WestRichlands limits – all with ministries focused on helping people lead successful lives without fear of poverty or hunger just beyond their doorsteps!
