West Richland is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Monto-Narrows micropolitan area. The land that now makes up West Richland was first settled by the Klamath and Wenatchee tribes in the late 1820s and early 1830s. In 1853, Gold Rush miners arrived in Western Washington looking for gold but found only dry salt mines and abandoned villages. By 1870, over 1,000 people lived in what is now West Richland. In 1886, two families bought a tract of land on the north side of Yakima River from the Yakama Nation for $1 per acre (the equivalent of about ). They named their new community "West Richland" after their farmstead on prominent Mount Rainier National Park property to the east. The town grew rapidly during its early years with businesses such as grocery stores, hotels and meatpacking plants opening up around 1900. However, World War I destroyed much of western Washington's economy and led to a rapid decline in population numbers between 1920 and 1930; by 1940 only 5% remained of the original 1,500 residents. During World War II many workers from Northern Washington came to work on Naval Base Kitsap Peninsula which spanned central Puget Sound from Seattle to Tacoma; this had a significant impact on West Richland as most people who worked there were Native American or Japanese Americans brought over as laborers rather than natives born here who might have been more likely to support traditional social values associated with their cultures (such as opposition to war). Many local businesses closed during World War II due to lack of customers or competition from wartime production at nearby Boeing plants; however some locals did reopen after 1945 because they could find other employment opportunities available in post-war America. ?The Bendix Corp., later known as Boeing Co., built its first plant in west Bellevue in 1949(later renamed Everett) when it outgrew its original facility south of downtown Bellevue.? In 1957 Microsoft opened its Northwest Research Laboratory(later Redmond), located adjacent to Yakima River crossing just west of today's town limits.? This put an end finally to west Bellevue's isolationism which has continued into recent times.? Reflecting this trend some businesses still remain open such as The hardware store dating back To 1909.; while others have closed such as Safeway which closed 1988.? One notable resident through all these years has been Mayor Leonid Bershadin who served since 2003 until his resignation effective January 1st 2009.? As mentioned earlier many local businesses have also closed but many locals are still active including musicians like Jay Ferentz whose band played at night at The Blue Moon until it went out OF BUSINESS?! In 2008 Microsoft relocated its Headquarters away from downtown Bellevue making way for an expanded campus called "Redmond Campus".? Turned into an apartment complex today!
