West Richland, Washington is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. West Richland is located on the north bank of the Columbia River and is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. It lies within two blocks of Bellevue and one block north of Moses Lake. The first settlers in what would become West Richland were mechanics coming from Kentucky to found a railroadside town in 1853. They named their new town after General Winfield Scott's headquarters on Long Island during the Mexican-American War. In 1877, John Wesley Smith came to West Richland from Bellevue to start a flour mill and sawmill. He donated land for a school and church which opened in 1879. The first post office was established in 1881 and was known as Indianola until 1907 when it changed its name to WestRichmond. The population reached 10,000 by 1900 but declined due to natural causes such as malaria being more rampant then than now; however by 1910 it had increased again to 13,541 with 1% growth due to annexation by Everett (now Kirkland). In 1924–1925 local businessmen pooled money for building an airfield forty miles east of Tacoma called Northwest Air Force Base (later Clark Air Base). When World War II began mandatory military enlistment quotas were set for Thurston County residents so no one could leave without consequence many young men chose instead serve out their terms in other parts of the war effort or returned home before they qualified returning home underage or working off their sentence instead of attending college like most people did at that time (one early resident became president of Northwest Airlines). After the war ended there was still no airfield so business owners pooled money once again for this new endeavor called Camp Chelan National Monument which would open July 1st 1945 when training operations stopped because American troops had been sent home prior to Victory In Europe Day which made May 15th 1945 also Memorial Day US soil) campground/hospitality park with 3 restaurants/bars/a basketball court/storerooms(the last store closed Dec 1969), 2 motels/1 hotel opened(the only motel west of Spokane), 12 recreational sites including 6 water sports sites checklists still exist today about what used then CampChelan today
