West Richland is one of the oldest towns in Thurston County and has been inhabited since 1847. The first settler in what would become West Richland was James Swayne, who arrived about 1847. In 1898, a post office called West Richland was established and remained in operation until 1959. The town's history can be traced back to its founding as a small community on the banks of the Columbia River. At that time it consisted of just a few homes and businesses. Many of the early settlers were farmers who settled along the riverbank because there were no other places to grow crops. Over time, West Richland became an important commercial center for Thurston County because it had access to ample water resources and good transportation options. In 1925,Westrichtowns merged with neighboring Stevenson and formed what is now known as Thurston County.(1) Despite this merger being controversial due to different interests involved, it helped to solidify Westrichtowns' status as an important local community. Today, many people from both communities continue to maintain strong ties through their shared memories and experiences from those years.(2) One of the most significant events during WestRichlands's history came when Thurston County changed its name from Clark County to Thurston in 1907.(3) This change was prompted by Territorial Legislature efforts to make Thurston more resembled Washtenaw County surrounding it rather than Tacoma.(4) It wasn't until 1949 that WestRichlands again regained its original name when ClarkCountywasagain renamed after territorial namesake Benjamine Crayton.(5) Since then,thecommunity has undergone several name changes reflecting its changing demographic makeup:fromresidentialisturningintocommercialcenterinthe1970s(6),toa suburbanresidentialismoothouseandbusinesscombinationin2000(7),tonowitscurrentnameofWestRich land
