West Richland, Washington is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. West Richland was founded in 1851 by men from Tacoma and first named "Richmond", then "West Richland". In 1872 it became the townsite of West Richland when King City and other nearby towns consolidated into Thurston County. The first settler in what is now West Richland was John Hargrave who arrived with his family on July 10, 1851. He named his land Richmond after his home county of England. Hargrave's son James bought 100 acres (40 hectares) of land from David Boren on December 17, 1850 for $2 per acre ($0.50 per hectare). On February 15, 1861 James Hargrave married Martha Jane Smith at the courthouse in Tacoma and they moved to their new home which he had built on four acres (1 ha). They would have six children: George Washington Hargrave (1862-1941), Mary Jane Hargrave (1864-1942), Alice Linnie Hargrave (1868-1948), Edwin Arlington Hargrake (1870-1945), and Franklin Roosevelt Harry S Truman (1912-2008). James Kellingham deposited lumber near present day SR 99 south of the intersection of US 101 and SR 167 on November 6th 1840 while traveling down what is now Yesler Way NE. lumbering began soon afterwards as teams came upriver every two weeks or so to cut cedar branches for furniture construction along what would later become I–5 highway including earlier depots at SE 287th Street NW corner today's Interstate 5 Bridge over Puget Sound & Alaskan Way Viaduct before terminating near present day SR 99 where mills stopped because no more logs could be found due to rapids on river below bridge - see map below! Today westrichland starts well eastof i5 about 4 miles northwest of yesler way across columbia valley
The first Post Office in West Richland was established on May 24, 1857. The first postmaster was S.W. Fisher.
