The area now known as West Richland was first populated by the Cheyenne and Arapaho people. The first white man to live in the area was Captain George Vancouver, who explored the Pacific Northwest in 1792. In 1847, gold was discovered near what is now Yakima Valley, and a rush of settlers followed. The town of Spokane was founded in 1848, and by 1861 it had become the second largest city in Washington after Seattle. Spokane became an agricultural center during this time, with large-scale irrigation systems being developed. In 1907, Spokane hosted the World's Fair, which brought much attention to the region. After World War II ended, Spokane experienced rapid growth as a commercial center. The city's population increased from around 50 thousand in 1945 to over 100 thousand by 2000.
