In 1888, Seattle disconnected from Puget Sound and began serving as its primary commercial center for transportation and communication within Washinton County. A new downtown core developed around what is now Union Station and major events such as fairs were held at this location throughout much of the early 20th century. During World War II, Boeing plants were built in nearby Richland and Kent counties; these produced military equipment including bombers, ships, tanks, aircraft carriers etc., which helped contribute to Washington's wartime economy. After hostilities ended in 1945, Wenatchee experienced rapid postwar growth as businesses moved into new buildings along Second Avenue just south of Union Station complex – still active today as Oneida Place Mall shopping districtlain by Macy's , Sears , JCPenney & Nordstrom . In recent years many properties have been redeveloped or are being used for housing developments such as The Lakeshore development adjacent to I-5 north of downtown which has seen an influx of high-end retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus .
