In 1902, Wenatchee became part of what is now Yakima County. In 1912, the city annexed land east of Second Street to form an arterial street system that still exists today. In 1916, Wenatchee began hosting its own school district which remains operational today. In 1938, Wenatchee became home to the first air raid shelter in Washington County and continues to serve as such today. Wenatchee has experienced many economic fluctuations throughout its history including during World War II when it was hit hard by rationing and fuel shortages. However, overall it has been a prosperous community with strong social programs that have helped keep residents healthy and connected through volunteerism and support from government officials.
Wenatchee, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of central Washington. The population was 8,843 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yakima County. Wenatchee's chief industry is mining, but it also has a significant agricultural sector and manufacturing sector including aluminum production and textiles. The town's downtown contains several old buildings from its early days as a logging community. The first people to live in Wenatchee were the Menominees who arrived in 1811 from Winnebago County, Iowa. They built their village on the banks of the Wanapum River near what is now downtown Wenatchee. The first white person to live in Wenatchee was John James Audubon who came in 1827 and took up land that later became part of Wenatchee Village. He named it for his friend and mentor Jean Baptist de la Salle, Sieur de la Salle du Lac (1788-1861). In 1861, when Yakima County was organized, Wenatchee Village was chosen as its site. The first buildings were erected there: a Methodist church and school building; an inn called the "Hood" which served as both hotel and jail; a blacksmith shop; a store; two churches - one Congregationalist and one Episcopal - together with four other buildings used for various purposes such as post office, court house, bank etc.; three miles (5 km) of track leading to ore mines at nearby Wahpeton Creek; seven log cabin types were built: One hundred years after Audubon's arrival, many members of his family still lived in Wenatchee Village including his grandson Absalom Akeley (1839-1922). After living there until 1922 he moved to Seattle where he founded University Heights Cemetery there. In 1935 he sold most of his holdings in Seattle to become president of Evergreen Foundation which operated Evergreen Nazarene College until it merged with Pacific Union College in 1978 to form Puget Sound University In recent times much progress has been made within Wenatchee while also facing some challenges such as declining oil prices & job losses associated with them Today's economy relies heavily on tourism although modestly employed locals continue some industrial activity

Today, Wenatchee is home to a diverse range of cultural activities including music festivals such as summerStage and Wakarusa Folklife Festival; art galleries such as Cascade Art Gallery; historical museums such as Benaroya Museum; and restaurants such as Chinook Grill and Grille du Nord Social Club which offer excellent food options across several cuisines including American Indian cuisine (such as salmon dishes), European cuisine (such as steak houses), Japanese cuisine (including sushi), Northwest African cuisine (such as Nigerian dishes), Ethiopian food (including injera breads), Italian food (such as pizzas) and more.

In 1941, Wenatchee was renamed Tacoma after U.S. Senator George Mitchell.
