Wenatchee, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of north-central Washington. The population was 3,838 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County. The site where Wenatchee now stands was first inhabited by the Shoshone people in the late 18th century. In 1855, gold was discovered in nearby Seattle and Wenatchee became interested in becoming a part of that city. However, when Seattle's streetcar system arrived, Wenatchee began to lose population because its residents could no longer get to work on streetcar tracks running through their town. In 1916, however, land grantees from Washington state bought up all of the remaining stock in the Spokane & Wenatchee Railroad Company and made it an independent company named Wenatchee & Eastern Railway (WE) In 1923, WE built a new station on what is now Main Street in Wenatchee and began to build a first train line from Spokane to Wenatchee. That same year also saw construction of the first dam on Stillaguamish River which would later be used as water storage for WE With increasing access to transportation through Puget Sound and Spokane County, we grew quickly as a commuter town with businesses serving our commuters including: airport cargo handling; appliance stores; funeral home; medical supply store; boat dealership; lumberyard and mill . Wenatchee is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-King County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a log settlement on the eastern edge of what is now Wenatchee City in 1855 by fur traders and missionaries travelling through the area on their way to California. The first settler was John Atwater. In 1863, gold was discovered in Wenatchee and prices for gold ore increased, so settlers started arriving from all over the country. By 1870, over 60 people lived in Wenatchee; it had become an agricultural center with corn and wheat production accounting for most of its income. In 1907,250 acres (100 hectares) of land were given to the town by mining company owner George Stephenson for $5 per acre ($ ). This gift allowed Wenatchee to be self-sufficient and became one of its main attractions to tourists and residents alike. Because coalmining became more important after World War II, Wenatchee's economy changed drastically during that time. In 1959, following passage through Congress of the National Education Act Amendments (NEA), which granted public schools throughout America free tuition*, Wenatchee received state funding* which helped keep its schools open until 1984 when they were closed due to budget cuts*. After a referendum vote in 1987 voted against reopening its schools*, school board member Steve Brownell recommended closures starting in 1990 due to financial problems*. However, fundraising efforts failed to raise enough money* so closure did not happen until 1994 when it again voted against opening because there wasn't enough money available * . Today, many businesses have moved into Wenatchee from other larger towns nearby such as Mukilteo or SeaTac* making it an ever growing community with vibrant economic growth. While some aspects have continued to decline such as poverty rates*, unemployment rates are high* (-9% according to 2013 report*) despite having low taxes*, overall crime rates are very low* (.2 violent crimes/1k inhabitants according to 2014 study*) thanks largely to good police policy combined with tight security measures such as gun confiscation if convicted *.
The city of Wenatchee was founded in 1854 by John C. Fremont and the Great Northern Railroad. The city served as the capital of what is now Washtenaw County from 1855 to 1959.
