There is no one answer to the question of how gun chokes began. Some historians believe that the first time a firearm was used to choke someone occurred during the American Revolution, when British soldiers shot and killed a man in Wenatchee, Washington with a rifle. Others believe that it may have been done as early as 1824 when Captain John Fenton used a shotgun to shoot and kill his brother-in-law, David Denny, with whom he had an open relationship. The use of firearms to choke people became more common after 1868 when Congress passed the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act which banned certain types of firearms from being imported into the United States. This law made it much harder for criminals to obtain handguns and caused many fatalities due to gunshots being fired at close range.

The town saw a large influx of immigrants during World War I, when millions of people from all over the country came to fight in the war. After the war, Wenatchee experienced a large population growth as people moved away from farm life for work on timber and other industries. In 2001, Wenatchee became one of the first towns in Washington to be incorporated as a city.
