The first Europeans to visit what is now Wenatchee were fur traders from Russia in 1805. They named the area "Wenatchee" for a place near their base on the lower Columbia River. The first recorded settler was John Jacob Astor in 1827. In 1862, the mainstem of the Snake River was diverted through Wenatchee by Secretary of War Salmon P. Chase and built into a canal to provide water for agricultural purposes and for military transport on the Snake River Trail. This diverted river made Wenatchee an important port and industrial center; lumbering became an important industry after natural resources began to be exploited nearby. In 1865, gold was discovered at Gold Lake and other sites in central Washington; this led to new mining and milling activities throughout north-central King County and increased shipping along Seattle's waterfront with it. Coalmining started around 1880 but ended around 1920 because of environmental problems caused by coal dust flying into homes from mines near Mount Rainier National Park
Wenatchee was founded by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in 1805. The first white settlers arrived in 1827, and the town name was changed to Wenatchee in 1839. In 1853, Wenatchee became a territorial county seat. In 1959, the county was merged into Kitsap County.
