In 1872 butteville resident James Fenton donated land for what would become Washougal County after seeing how well things were going in neighboring Multnomah County with its rich coal deposits The town's growth continued throughout the 1800s with a robust Commercial District which included several businesses such as:Butterfield & Henson grocery store; Jardine & Hastings dry goods store; Pacific Coal Mining Company millinery shop; Purdy Brewery and many others until it reached its peak in 1907 when there were 24 businesses operating within walking distance or less including three hotels/motels - Western Hotel (now Courtyard by Marriott), Eastern Hotel (now Regency Inn), and American Hotel A major change took place in 1907 when electric streetlights went into use making life easier for local residents The late 1800s saw strong growth for washougallians due to new immigrants coming overland from all over Europe - many Germans settled here while others came throughthe port at Tacoma Narrows
