Washougal is a town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,902 at the 2010 census. Washougal is part of the Wenatchee–The Cities Metropolitan Area. The community has a public school system and two churches. Washougal was founded in 1851 by George Washougal and his wife Hannah Hanna. It became a town on November 3, 1881, after it was chosen as the seat of Thurston County by an act of the Washington Territorial Legislature. The name is derived from Wacoma—the Shawnee word meaning "watercourse." In 1907, Washougal had its first garage and later had its first telephone line. In 1955, Washougal started manufacturing cheese products for local restaurants. In 1957, it started selling gasoline salespersons with tow truck service to help farmers deliver their crops to market more efficiently. In 1970, the town built its first municipal building and announced plans to add a library and other public services over time; however these plans never came to fruition because of budget cuts made by then-Governor Ronald Reagan during his administration. In 1995, an effort began to rename each block in town after notable Washingtonians who had died in that year or earlier including Mary Anna Seward (1814-1885), Ulysses S Grant (1822-1865), Salmon Pelly (1793-1872), Moses Aschard (1796-1876), Sherman Adams (1800-1868) and John Wesley Ellsworth (1787-1863). However due to protests from residents this plan failed and was abandoned after just six blocks were renamed. On July 16th 2018 A large fire destroyed most of washougal's downtown core complete with all buildings save one which are now being used as apartments

After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes and businesses. In 1976, washougall became part of Federal Way city limits.
