Washougal, Washington is a town in central King County, Washington. The population was 2,388 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and the home of Mount Vernon National Cemetery. The first European to visit Washougal was Captain George Vancouver on July 26, 1792. He named it "Washougal" after his ship HMS Discovery which he had discovered in Puget Sound on January 14, 1789. Captain Vancouver's party included thirteen men and one woman – Haida Chiefess Martha Nee-ke-win – who accompanied him on his voyage from Seattle to Victoria Island in what is now British Columbia. In 1839, when gold was discovered in the area, people from nearby Olympia began coming to Washougal to prospect for mines. In 1847–48, a millrace called Upper Washougal was built by Hiram Sutter and others near present day Junction Street and Pioneer Avenue in order to get water out of the River spoke between Lower Washougal and Olympia (now part of downtown Olympia). This millrace became known as Sutter's Mill Race because Hiram Sutter owned most of its rights. In 1865 a sawmill was built by John Matteson on First Creek east of present day Highway 99 north of junction with I-5; this mill later became known as Matteson Sawmills Company Limited (MSCL). The company produced lumber until 1984 when it merged with a subsidiary owned by Pacific Northwest Paper Corporation (PANPC) to form millsite Industries Incorporated (MISI). MISI continued producing wood products until its sale for pulpwood production to J&J Pulp & Paper Company in 1998; that company ceased operations in 2006. A post office called Washougal operated from 1846 until 1865; it was moved to Bendigo during that time because there were no mailboxes available near the town center. In 1868–69 an academy was established at upperwashugal creek for white children only due to growing numbers of Native American students living within driving distance of school districts outside King County without access to public education opportunities either through state or federal programs designed specifically for those students. The academy closed in 1870 due lack of funding but reopened three years later as Gonzaga Female Academy under Instruction Association name before closing again around 1880 due largely because many girls did not want private instruction while living close enoughputs their mothers out work also having no other choice then being forced into such an unenlightened situation

Washougal is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, founded in 1847 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as an outpost on the Columbia River. The population was 29,967 at the 2010 census, making it the largest town in King County. Washougal is located on the eastern edge of downtown Seattle, between Interstate 5 and University Way South. It is bordered to the east by Lake Union and to the north by Mercer Island. The first permanent settler in what is now Washougal was George Vancouver, who arrived there on December 26, 1792 as part of his second expedition along with Captain James Cook and their ships Discovery and Endeavour. Vancouver named his new settlement after Sir David Brewster, Governor of New South Wales (Australia). The first store opened in 1847; it closed in 1861 due to competition from Seattle's commercial interests. In 1860–1861, Washougal had a population of about 180; however this increased rapidly due to immigration over that period from Europe (mainly from Ireland), Asia (mainly China), and other parts of North America. By 1870-71, Washougal had reached a peak population of about 350 residents; however this also increased rapidly due to new waves of immigration during that decade – most notably Russians – which led to many changes within the community including amalgamation with neighbouring cities such as Seattle and Bellevue in 1901; land purchases dating back to 1848 were made for development purposes including: Alki Point Harbor Estates & Marina Park Recreation District - now known as Hansen Beach Park; First Hill neighborhoods - now called Greenwood Village - Seward Park Neighborhood Association - now known as Capitol Hill Neighborhood Association; Queen Anne's Domain - now known as Pioneer Square
