Washougal is a small town in Douglas County, Washington, United States. It was incorporated in 1897 and has a population of about 9600 people. The name Washougal comes from the Chinook word "wáh-shō-gāl," meaning "a place where salmon can lie." The first settlers in Washougal were Hitchiti Indians. In 1836, the Spanish discovered washoe (Washougal) Bay and began to fur trade with the natives. A wharf was built at the mouth of the river in 1837, and by 1840 there were twelve white families living on Upper Washougal Creek. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Fort Vancouver with his army and founded what is now Douglas County; General George Armstrong Custer struck gold near Gold River in 1876, which led to increased fishing activity around Washougal Bay. By 1888, there were 137 residents living on Lower Washougal Creek alone; by 1898 it had grown to over 9600 people. A post office was established at Upperwashougal creek in 1892; it moved to its present location on Walnut Street in 1903. The town’s first school opened for students in 1909; it burned down two years later but was reconstructed and opened again for students in 1912. The first adult store opened locally also that year; it closed within a few years but was replaced by a grocery store which continued until 1967 when it closed again due to economic reasons. The town’s water system came into being when an 85 feet deep well became available nearby after heavy rains caused flooding on several occasions during 1951-1952 season; this well still serves as one of the main sources of water for local residents today! One interesting fact about Washougall is that all three streets running through town - Main Street (north), Walnut Street (south), and Indian Road (west) - are named after military members who served here during World War I or World War II: First Sergeant Chester Aiken (USMC); Second Lieutenant Clarence Kapp (USNR); Master Sergeant Eugene Hickey (USN).

Washougal was founded in 1871 by Captain George Washburn and his family during the Gold Rush era. The town was named after Washburn's ranch near present-day Wenatchee, Washington, which served as its original capital from 1876 to 1880. The first post office in Washougal opened in 1872; it was moved to its current location in 1893. In 1907, the town became a city under an act of Congress passed to annex adjacent rural areas within Wenatchee County into Washington; this annexation formed what is now known as the Wenatchee–Chelan County Micropolitan Statistical Area. In 1963, Washougal lost its charter as a city and reverted back to its historic status as a small town with a population of 2,351 people until it regained it on July 1, 2018 when an act of Congress increased that number to 3,844 residents. In 1969, Washougallian High School –now known as Snohomish Valley High School–opened for students grades 9 through 12 after years of construction that included almost four miles (6 km) of new roadways and twenty-six buildings including one new high school building complete with glass walls imported from Europe costing $500,000 dollars! A year later in 1970 Snohomish Valley Intermediate School opened for grades 7 through 12 followed by Central Middle School which opened in 1974 when all three schools were combined into one complex at 5th Avenue South & Eastern Way before becoming Snohomish Valley Senior High School (now renamed Centralia Senior High School) which reopened following renovation & expansion totaling more than $200 million dollars! With such overwhelming success story then coming from such a small community there must be something special about this place because according to recent reports many people still visit or live here every day despite what may seem like tough times politically or economically! After 45 years since establishment some things have changed but most importantly due to local demand businesses are growing big time making jobs available for locals while also creating opportunities for education for future generations!
