Washougal is located in the state of Washington and has been inhabited by humans since at least the late Pleistocene. The first European to visit Washougal was Captain Juan Pablo de Ayala on July 24, 1792, during his exploratory survey of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Ayala named the location "Washougal" for a small river he saw nearby. In 1854, Washougal became part of the United States after it was acquired from British Columbia by President Millard Fillmore as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Civil War. In 1902, it was incorporated as a city and remains an agricultural center today. The population increased rapidly in World War II due to military activity and production in nearby Cheney Dam Number Two (now Yelm), which created a demand for water resources that led to Washougall's growth. The city is located on both sides of Salmon River and straddles two counties - King County on its east side and Pierce County on its west side. It is bordered by immediate suburbs such as Redmond on its north, Bellevue on its east, Kirkland on its south, Ilwaco on its southeast, Maple Valley on its southwest, Northgate Parkonçaiseau Airport outside town limits and finally Renton Township to the south-west. Fishing communities dotting the shoreline include Sooke Peninsula bordering Thurston County to the north-east; Alki Beach facing Queen Anne Island across Puget Sound to the south-west; Tumwater Bay stretching from Everett across Puget Sound into Kitsap County; Walla Walla lying immediately adjacent to Olympic National Park beyond SeaTac Airport; Yalupai Country lying between Stevens Point and Mukilteo lies within King County; Mount Baker lies just outside town limits between Whitman County and ChelanCounty
