Washougal, Washougal County, Washington was born on November 10, 1884. The town was named for General George Washburne and it is located on the Columbia River in the Yakima Valley of Washington. At that time the area included parts of what are now Douglas and King counties. The first settler in Washougal was James McLaughlin who arrived in 1878. A school and post office were established in 1879. By 1905 there were over 100 settlers living in the town. The first rifle company to be organized in Washougal was the 3rd Infantry Regiment which formed on October 15, 1889 from local men to fight against Spanish forces at Cascades National Monument near Olympia, Washington Territory. The regiment served until 1898 when it left for California to help prepare for war with Mexico. In 1903 a new rifle company was organized called 1st Battalion Pioneer Rifle Company which served as an honor guard unit during baseball games at Tacoma Dome while military policemen guarded the event. In 1907 a group of citizens interested in founding their own town founded Washougal Academy which became an important educational institution within Washougal boundaries until 1959 when it merged into Thurston High School

In 1887, Washougal became the site of what would become one of the most famous moments in American history – when General Ulysses S. Grant visited and inspected gold mines there during his visit to Northwest America as part of his exploration for President Grover Cleveland's run for office. In 1925, Washougall saw its biggest challenge since its founding: The opening of Interstate 5 which bypassed it completely. Because I-5 required right-of-way through Washougall Township (west side), construction crews built an interchange just east of town while residents wereEvacuated and their homes were destroyed or damaged during the evacuation process that followed; this event also helped spur development around town including several high-rise apartments and shopping centers that have still thrived to this day

In the 1990s, Washougal regained some status as an agricultural center with efforts to promote tourism and support local businesses.
