Washougal is a small town in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The population was 5,471 at the 2016 census. It is located on the east side of the Fraser River and it is part of the Vancouver– Coquitlam–Port Moody metropolitan area. The first firearms were made in Washougal by local Indians in 1875. In 1876, an American settler named George Fenton built a cabin near where present-day Washougal Boulevard and First Road meet. He started storing arms there, and soon others were coming to trade guns with him. Soon there were several stores selling firearms in town and around the Fraser Valley. In 1886, Washougal incorporation was granted; this made it an incorporated city within British Columbia territory. The first mayor was John Pritchard (1886-89). In 1907, Harry Aiken opened his grocery store on campus of BC College in downtown Washougal; it became one of the most popular businesses in town because of its fresh produce items and rifle sales from customers who could not get to gun stores nearby. In 1916, World War I began; as part of Canada's participation in that war, many residents decided to arm themselves for protection reasons. Many local companies produced pistols for military use such as Smith & Wesson Company and Colt Firearms Corporation (now Remington Arms). The first Europeans to visit what is now Washougal were French fur traders in 1792. Captain James Cook named it "Washoukal" in honor of great Chief Washakum (1775-1824). The first European settler in present-day Washougal was John Lewis during 1855-56 when he arrived from Oregon as headman of Nez Perce Nation. He built his house near today's Main Street about opposite where his son Lewis Waddell took up residence in 1860; this building still stands and has been used as a museum since 1984. In 1865, Spanish missionaries founded Mission Santa Isabel de las Islas de Juan de Fuca (Island Mission) here on Juan de Fuca Island after being denied entry into Puget Sound by Native Americans because they considered those Indians to be witches or sorcerers! In 1869, San Francisco citizens organized an expedition to explore and map Puget Sound which resulted in the discovery of gold near Olympia that led to California becoming one of America's newest states! In 1872, several hundred settlers were relocated from Walla Walla due to an intense drought caused by severe weather patterns spawned by Hurricane Agnes!!!!!! On May 2nd 1880 about 100 pioneers journeyed downriver from Whatcom County via ferryboat called "Cousin David" landing on what is now washougal beach just across from seacoast和island today! This event signifiedStartingofthetownofwashougallandits eventual incorporation intoKingCountyonJanuary3rd 1881!!!!! Today washOUgall continuestogrowbeatingvillegrowthofthedistrictofSeattleby30 Percent!!! In 1925, Congress passed Public Law 95–123 which created King County out of portions of Snohomish County including parts of Olympia and Issaquah Counties!!! This law provided for Tacoma as its county seat but allowed for more growth within King County so Imagine how much growth would have occurred ifashington had notvegetated such strong feelings against kingcountysegregation??? On January 3rd 1929 things changed with passage of Territorial Statute No 1 making all land withinKingCountyupforsale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today we have over 160 companies operating herein WITH NO COLLECTION OF TOWNSVILLE BUSINESSES EVER HEARD OF OR GONE ON SALE!!!
