Washougal is a town in Skamania County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,421 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Skamania County. Washougal was founded on February 12, 1856 by fur traders from Russia and Thompson Lake. In 1858, it became part of the newly formed Thurston County. On November 15, 1907, Washougal incorporated as a city and retains its charter to this day. The first white settlers in what is now Washougal were fur traders who left Russia for British Columbia in 1848 and arrived in early 1850. They named their new settlement Kootenai River after a remote mountain peak near their destination. The first post office in Washougal opened on January 10, 1853 under the name of Nisqually Falls; it was renamed Wenatchee on July 6th that year because of an act of Congress which granted voting rights to Native Americans within territorial boundaries (the area now known as Spokane County). First organized politically as a township on February 12th of 1856 by commissioners appointed by Territorial Governor George Mason with instructions to organize "a proper government for these people," Washougall quickly grew into one of the most successful towns in western Washington due to its easy access to transportation and lively commercial center that attracted farmers and entrepreneurs alike. By 1870, there were over 320 residents living in what would become downtown Washougall with business extending from mercantile storesills upriver all the way to mills located along the river's edge at Wenatchee Landing where ferries deposited goods for shipment downriver onto barges operated by men such as David Starr Jordan (founder and president of Boeing) until 1965 when navigation improvements made getting supplies downriver much more difficult so large shipments had to be moved by truck or barge only a few times per week instead of every day stopping at various landing sites upstream or downstream from downtown where goods could be picked up and transported ashore along either side of the river before being unloaded again for shipment downriver
Washougal, Washington was founded in 1855 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It became a U.S. Territory in 1889. The town is located on the Columbia River, about 20 miles east of Seattle.
