Washougal, Washington is a small town in the state of Washington located about 20 miles east of Seattle. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Washougal was founded in 1855 and named for General George Washburne. The first post office in Washougal was established on December 8, 1856. In 1881, the town incorporated as a city and has since grown to be one of the most populous in Washington with over 2,000 residents. The history of Washougal can be traced back to when General George Washburne visited the area in 1855 while on his way to fight against Native Americans near present-day Olympia. After touring the area he decided that this was an ideal spot for a new settlement and called it "Washougal". In 1861, after being elected as Mayor of Tacoma by popular vote, Bangs appointed him Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Lewis and Clark County. This position allowed him to help manage interactions between settlers and indigenous people living within his jurisdiction. In 1865–1866, Bangs developed what is now known as downtown Washougal into what it is today thanks to donations from early settler John Davenport and other individuals associated with the town's development. By 1870 there were six businesses operating within the limits of what is now downtown; three schools (one public and three private), two churches (One Methodist Episcopal and One Presbyterian), two stores (A hardware store operated by Wm Hargrave & Son until 1886, thenowned by J Fritsch until 1904), a blacksmith shop/forge/,and a few homes. During its heyday during late 19th century and early 20th century Washougallians enjoyed excellent Hang Time water skiing right along Puget Sound shoreline which still offers some excellent skiing today!
