Washougal's elevation is 5,491 feet (1,660 m). The first people to live in what is now Washougal arrived from Canada around 1800. They were farmers and fur traders who traded with the Yakama and other tribes living in the region. By 1855, most of what is now Washougal had been established as a small mining community with two hotels and twenty-five citizens. Mining operations ceased around 1925 when production of coal became exhausted onsite. In 1962, an act was passed by Congress which designated land near Olympia as wildlands for conservation purposes and made it available for development only through the authority of the US Forest Service or local governments acting through their parks departments. The townsite was annexed into Olympia on January 1st, 1966; however, until 1959 there was no water available to support agriculture in central Washougal so hogs were herded into town meters from May until October to produce salt pork for winter storage; this ended after a well located about northwest of town became operational during 1978-79 providing potable water for residents & businesses

Washougal is located on the east side of Lake Wenatchee and is part of the Wenatchee–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that now makes up Washougal was first settled by people from England in 1853. In 1864, the name of the town was changed to Washougal after Union General Ulysses S. Grant's visit to that area. At first, most of what is now Washougal was rural farmland used for growing crops and raising livestock. By 1880, however, there were enough homes and businesses in town to support a full-time population. That year, the legislature approved a plan to build a dam across Clearwater Creek so that water could be brought into town for irrigation purposes. Work on the dam started in 1885 and finished in 1888; it created one of Washougal's main attractions – Clearwater River Park today. The growth of Washougal continued until World War II when all but two streets in town were destroyed by bombing during World War II (the two streets being rebuilt soon after). Although not directly affected by war-time destruction, many residents lost their homes or had their property taken away as part of military construction projects such as airfields and ammunition dumps; nevertheless, many aspects of local life survive today including nods to wartime culture throughout downtown washougall
