The first Europeans to visit Washougal were members of Captain John May's company who went upriver from what is now Seattle in 1792. They called it "Washuell" and Fort George was built on an island near present-day wash in 1802 as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was renamed for General James Washburn duringoperative against Native Americans in 1805 when he commanded an American brigade under Major General David Worth during the Battle of Lake Stevens. In 1846, Washougal became a town when it was merged with what are now Yakima and Moses lakes townships to formthe Spokane-Washougal Borough. The first post office was established in 1847 and remained open until 1907. The first store opened in 1888 and later became known as The Pioneer Store which still stands today. In 1905, there were only three residences in town; by 1910 there were over 100 homes and businesses including two stores, one bank, two churches, a school, four hotels, twelve grain elevators (all operated by Pacific Great Western Railroad), eleven sawmills (All operations by Puget Sound Lumber Company), ten farms (six raised corn, six beans), five shoe factories (all operated by Tacoma Shoemaker Manufacturing Company) and eighteen shops employing 1,500 people manufacturing everything from shoes to furniture to automobiles. It wasn't until after World War II that Washougall began experiencing rapid growth due to its proximity to Interstate 90 which made it easy for businesses to move into town from outlying areas such as Spokane or Wenatchee valleys where access was limited or difficult. Today many residents continue their roots here with close affiliation with local churches dating back more than fifty years There has never been any single event that has shaped who we are as people here atwashougaland our culture has grown organically over time through our relationship with nature itself We enjoy fishing outings along the river every August thanks largely to our Friends of the Columbia River Trout Unlimited group whose programs have enabled us catch some truly amazing fish including a 20-pound chinook salmon recently!
