Washougal, Washington is a small town located in the Yakima Valley of northwestern Washington. The population was 5,443 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Douglas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bullet history in Washougal began with missionaries from Europe who arrived in 1847 and started a mission on what is now Northwest First Hill Road. They taught Christianity to the native people and developed a trade with local tribes. In 1855, the U.S. government established Fort Nez Perce as an outpost to protect transportation routes through Yakima Valley and it became known as "The fort that didn't exist." In 1861, Washougal was renamed for General George Washburne after he defeated Native Americans at Battle of Kennewick Mountains.. From 1862 until 1865, bullets were used by American troops in the Civil War to kill Native Americans from tribes such as the Spokane and other areas around Yakima Valley. In 1919, Bullets were first introduced into World War I when President Wilson ordered their production in order to help increase munitions production during World War I; however, they proved ineffective against enemy machineguns and were soon retired from service. Bullet history returned when automatic pistols became popular during World War II; however, automatic pistols also proved ineffective against enemy machineguns and were eventually replaced by firearms using cartridges carrying rounds instead of pellets

Washougal was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. The first white settlers arrived in 1881, when they founded the town of Aberdeen on the south bank of the Spokane River. In 1905, Washougal became a city and it has sincegrown to become one of the most populous towns in Washington. The Potawatomi Indians who lived in Washougal were some of the last groups to be forcibly removed from their land in what is now North Dakota and Canada during the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877. Many potawatomi chiefs were killed or taken captive, leaving their people scattered across many Indian Territory settlements including Washougall. In 1913, Congress passed an act allowing American Indian tribes to form towns within their own borders if they had a majority vote among their members. This Act allowed for many potawatomi chiefs to move into new communities and continue living with their people after being forced out of their homes years earlier.
