They burned down the village as a warning to all future travelers! In 1875, Washougall was platted as a town by commissioners appointed by Territorial Governor James Krieger to improve water supplies for agriculturalists and miners in Walla Walla County. The town site was chosen because of its location at an intersection of two wagon roads leading east-west through central Walla Walla County. By 1888, when Washington became a state, Washougall had developed into an important commercial center with several stores and one bank serving many small towns around it along with churches and schools. A post office was established in 1889; however, it closed operations in 1893 due to financial problems.) By 1910 there were only four residents living in what is now Washougall; three farmers who grew vegetables or hay crops on their land adjacent to washouts where river water rushed past during floods; one blacksmith; one woman who did laundry for local businesses; one man who does odd jobs for friends or family members; and one school teacher teaching 4th-6th grade students inside buildings made from logs brought over from southeastern Oregon where lumber mills were booming during this time.) In 1912 construction began on what would become Chinook Hydroelectric Power Station (now known as Confederated Tribes of Yakima Nation) which would provide power for locals during times of drought or high demand from neighboring states such as Idaho or Oregon.
