Washougal is a town in Washington, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. Washougal is part of the Wenatchee–Cedarport–Anacortes Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is located on the east bank of the newly formed Snake River. The village of Washougal was platted in 1811 by Captain George Vancouver as an outpost on what would become his final exploration of North America. By 1814, it had a store and two homes. In 1825, Captain George Vancouver's second voyage to North America visited Washougal and recommended that the name be anglicized to "Washoe". Residents were given land grants from Governor Isaac Stevens in 1827 and 1830 as part of efforts to build a town around Fort Hall (now Moses Lake). When gold was discovered in quartz veins near present-day Wenatchee in 1849, many people came to visit the new discovery. Business grew quickly, but by 1850 there were only 10 residents living in Washougal when Gold Rush fever broke out along the central coast of California. About 100 people came through Washougal during that year alone; 90% were womenfolk who worked as prostitutes or laundry workers at local hotels. In 1861, when Salmon Pelly succeeded Stevens as governor of Washington, he ordered troops stationed at Fort Hall to be withdrawn because he believed that gold could not be found thereabouts. One resident took offense at this order and built a small fort near his home to protect himself and his property from possible seizure by military forces if they did find gold vein Mineral County Gazetteer for November 1861: "A few feet below ground we have met with some very good lode prospects for mining which we cannot fail to explore." There continued no real prospecting until 1865 when Joshua Henson claimed significant amounts of silver ore while working for John Byron & Co., a rival mining firm based near Seattle. This led directly to development around today's downtown core where mills began operating beginning in 1865beginning with the First National Bank building which still stands today
