Washougal is a town in the U.S. state of Washington, founded in 1853 by settlers from British Columbia. The population was 5,645 at the 2010 census. Washougal's name comes from the Yakima word "wash" meaning "to clean." The first people to live in what is now Washougal were the Wenatchee tribe and their allies who arrived during the Nahelta period around 1792-1801. The Wenatchee built a small village on the west bank ofthe Yakima River near present day Olympia while they used an area east of where Washougal would be located for hunting and fishing areas that extended as far south as Whatcom County. In 1853, John Day purchased land at milepost 9 on US 12 about two miles north of present day Washougallow (now known as Goldendale) and began developing it into a town named after him, Washougal. By 1857, there were over 100 residents living in Washougallow and it had become a successful agricultural community with wheat fields, corn cribs and fruit trees among its features. During World War II, many Japanese Americans lived in eastern Washington during internment camps like Iwo Jima and Wajima until 1945 when they were moved to relocation centers like Topaz or Sweaty Buttes near Pullman Washington Territory due to fear of bombing raids targeting Everett WA which then included part of what is now Seattle%. According to author Don Freeman “Washougallow” was one such camp providing critical services to locals including removal of snow from streets throughout early summer so citizens could enjoy their seasonably warm homes without worry about frozen sidewalks later that fall! In recent years much focus has been placed on history in downtown Washougallow with exhibits surrounding Main Street celebrating local pioneers like pioneerGeneral George Armstrong Custer who fought at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument just east of town along US 12; General Lew Wallace who led troops against Native American forces during WWI just outside town limits; Drury Postmaster General James Gifford who served from 1889 until his death in 1902; Senator Stevens’s widow Mary Addams Stevens – he represented Oregon’s second congressional district following his election victory over incumbent Eugene McCarthy late 1932-1933; prominent businessperson Jerald Fenton – owner/manager Kwik Trip Orlando Hills RV Resort & Campground adjacent to Main Street since 1978 & current owner/operator Brian Slattery - general contractor & home builder specializingin remodeling projects throughout King County !!!
