The first permanent settler in what is now Walla Walla was George Stephenson, who arrived on July 3, 1806 as part of the crew of Discovery which explored and mapped the Columbia River. Stephenson built his log cabin on the banks of the river just north of where it enters Puget Sound. He named his new settlement after British colonel Johnwallah Burr (1772–1829), commander of an expedition that explored and map Central America in 1805-1809. In 1820, McClary & Company founded what would become McClary Bank & Trust Company in downtown Spokane; this company became one of the leading institutions in western Washington and played an important role in developing Spokane into a city. In 1824, James Wickersham traded land to Don Carlos Williams for a ferryboat that would connect Spokane with Oregon Trail towns such as Corvallis and Portland. The ferry became a vital link between eastern settlers and their counterparts downriver – something that helped spur development along both sides of the Snake River from central Oregon to eastern California. During World War I (1914-1918), many people from Walla Walla joined local military units which were called up for service during wartime due to lack of civilian options available at home at that time. Some notable citizens include Archibald Coxe (councilman 1907-1910), Everett Dirksen (Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War 1914-1920) and Edwin McMillan (director general Postmaster General 1919-1921). Many industrial plants were established around WWI including Boeing Aircraft Co., Alcole Brothers Paper Mills, Ortho Rubber Co., Standard Oil Co., Allis Chalmers Foundry & Machine Works and others like these helped create modern day Seattle as we know it today!
