Walla Walla, Washington is a town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–Vancouver–Portland metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Walla Walla were the Nisqually tribe. In 1851, John McLoughlin founded a post office here and named it after his ranch in Scotland which he had just crossed over from England on his way to become a settler in Oregon. The post office operated until 1907. In 1870, when the US railroad company Northern Pacific began construction of its new line eastward from Portland through remote areas of western Oregon, they chose Walla Walla as one of their towns to be built near their new railhead at Dry Gulch on the Columbia River Gorge. dry gulch became an important stop for both passengers and freight on this route because it was unspoiled by glaciers that had blocked much of the river during wintertime and allowed water traffic to flow unimpeded south along the gorge's escarpments. The town was founded on November 15, 1870 by James Wickersham who platted it around what is now Pioneer Square with two large grants from President Ulysses S Grant and General William Sherman as part of a land-promotion effort designed to increase agricultural production in west central Oregon following trails blazed by homesteaders during the Gold Rush era. Wickersham named his town for General Alfred Troup (1814-1892), headman of Fort Vancouver on Puget Sound where he developed trade relations with First Nations people before becoming superintendent general for Indian Affairs under President Andrew Johnson in 1865-68. Walla Walla experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city in 1911 with nearly 10% Of its population living within downtown limits; however, due largely to World War I veterans returning home and later white flight (the Great Depression ledto more limited housing development), most significant growth took place outside downtown boundaries untilafter World War II when many working class families moved into newly developed neighborhoods east and west of downtown while still playing an important rolein society

Walla Walla is a small town in Washington, United States. The community has been located on the banks of the Columbia River for over 100 years and was recently renamed after Mount Rainier. Two years later, in 1863, General Phil Sheridan ordered military operations against Native Americans known as The Battle of Fallen Timbers which resulted in more than 50 deaths including 30 children from cannon fire from Fort Snelling across six miles of open country northeast of present day Walla Walla
The first Europeans to visit Walla Walla were the Dutch in 1638. The town was founded by Major George Vancouver in 1792 as a trading post on the Columbia River. It was renamed Walla Walla by Governor John Cushing in 1824 after the neighboring town of Wenatchee. In 1847, the town became part of Washington Territory when it was created from parts of Oregon and California. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Walla Walla County in 1848. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching its peak at 100,000 in 1910. After World War I,Wallawalla began to decline due to out-migration and economic decline. However, recent growth has seen the community resume its role as an important center for local government and tourism.
