Walla Walla, Washington is a small town on the Columbia River in central Washington. The population was 5,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Whitman County seat. The name "Walla Walla" means "the high bank." The first permanent settlers in what is now Walla Walla County were prospectors and miners who discovered rich deposits of gold and silver in ancient volcanoes near the present-day town of Coeur d'Alene. In 1855, Congress passed an act to establish a national capital on the Columbia River and named it Washington City. The territorial government of Oregon refused to recognize Washington's claim to be the national capital, so in 1861, Congress again passed an act naming Washington City as the seat of federal government for all Northwest Territory. In 1865, when Oregon became a state, it expelled most of its federalized Native American citizens from its territory and set up its own government with itself as the only Indian tribe recognized by both states. This led to some tension between Oregon's white population and Native Americans over land rights. In 1870, Congress passed another act giving local governments within territories their own constitutions which allowed them more self-government than those under federal jurisdiction. As a result of this change in law, many small towns along the Columbia River began to grow up aroundWashington City—including Walla Walla—and formed what are today known as “municipal districts” (similar to but smaller than counties). A fire destroyed much of downtown business on May 15th 1881 during an Arapaho attack against Umatilla Indians living close by;[1] however popular tourist attractions such as Mount Rainier National Park continue uninterrupted today despite this event that left much damage including loss of historic architecture dating back centuries [2]. On October 10th 1888 two trains collided headlong downriver from Portland killing everyone on board;[3] however no buildings were destroyed but water seeped through several brick walls into streets below resulting in significant damage which still awaits restoration efforts today.[4] On January 24th 1930 finally ground was broken forwallacitywaterfrontparkcompletion,[5] becoming one of America's largest municipally funded public works projects ever completed! Walla Walla, Washington is a small city in the U.S. state of Washington located on the Columbia River about 120 miles (195 km) south of Seattle and 100 miles (160 km) north of Tacoma. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Walla Walla was founded by John McLoughlin in 1849 as a logging and trading post on the lower Columbia River. It became an agricultural town in 1875, and became a city in 1907. The history of Walla Walla can be traced back to 1849 when John McLoughlin founded what is now known as Walla Walla City on land he had purchased from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians for $6200. At first, McLoughlin built his log cabin near present-day downtown Walls with butchered animals that he would sell for hides and meat to traders travelling upriver to Whitman County for shipment to Oregon City. As early as 1850, McCloughlin began construction of a trading post at what is now called Post Office Square; it soon became known as "The Old Fort" because it was primarily used by fur trappers hunting bear and other game along the upper Columbia River. In 1865, during Indian Removal proceedings led by President Andrew Johnson, over 50 families were massacred at The Old Fort after they refused to leave their homes east of The Old Fort Creek in retaliation for being removed from their traditional lands west of The OldFort Creek. In 1865–1866, local whites also burned down several thousand acres (900 ha) of Native American forest in what is now the central business district of WallaWalla; this event is sometimes called "The Great Fire". John McLoughlin's son-in-law Harry Crampton developed agriculture into an important part of local life beginning around 1900; Crampton donated over 500 acres (2 ha) () to help feed farmers growing crops such as cotton, rice and potatoes near modern day Interstate 5 outside town limits; this helped make wallahalla one of Puget Sound's leading agricultural towns during this time period. By 1942 however World War II had started and many farms were destroyed due to bombing raids including those operated by Crampton himself; consequently wallahalla emerged as one of America's largest industrial cities during wartime production surges like those seen during 1945–1946 Pacific Theater atomic bomb tests detonating just outside city limits thereby injuring or killing thousands residents throughout most parts of the metropolitan area). After 1945 however some factories closed while others relocated within commuting distance while still others grew large commercial businesses such as Microsoft Corporation which moved its headquarters from Seattle to downtown Wallahalla following its establishment there in 1975 while Boeing continued operations outnear Interstates 590 and I-5 until 1996 when both companies merged into Lockheed Martin Corporation which continues operations today adjacent Interstate 5 via Greenwood Ave NE with easy access through downtown walls
The town of Walla Walla was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. The town was named for General James Klahr, who led the expedition. The first white settlers in Walla Walla were Solomon Marsden and his family, who arrived in 1806. By 1810, the population of Walla Walla had grown to over 100 people. In 1811, John Day set out from Oregon with a group of men to explore what lay beyond the Great American Land Rush region. On July 10, 1811, Day's party discovered the Snake River and decided to name their new discovery "Walla Walla." In 1812, John Day sold title to the land around present-dayWalla Walla to David Overholt. Overholt built a small log cabin on the banks of the Snake River and called it Overholm Station. By 1830, Overholt's farm had expanded into what is now known as downtownWalla Wallasoundly important for its lumber industry during Washington's early boom years both politically and economically due to its location on stagecoach routes connecting Puget Sound with eastern ports.
