They built log huts on an island in the Columbia River which they called "Denny Island." After a time, some other settlers arrived and started trading with these early inhabitants. By 1860 there were about 20 settlers living hereabouts. In 1862, three men from British Columbia named John Atherton, George Stephenson, and James Watt founded what would become thermal power plant 1 on land that had been leased from Chief Joseph for $1 per acre (about $ today). The plant would serve as one of the early examples of industrial development within King County and provide electricity for local homes for about 25 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1936. In 1865 Congress passed legislation providing for all tribes within Washington Territory to be organized into bands under tribalHeadquarters until such time as individual village councils could be constituted among them; this provision led to establishment of villages all over Indian Territory without any prior organization or consent by individual Indians – something that has always been sore with many residents of those areas today! wallawallax@hotmail

The first Europeans to visit what is now Walla Walla were fur traders who traveled through the area in 1792. The name "Walla" means "big river." In 1843, John C. Nez Perce had his party travel upriver from Olympia to find a water route to Southern Oregon. He named the stream that flows through his land "WallaWalla" after local Chief Dallinwalla's people he met on his trip. In 1851, Capt.[er] James Revere discovered gold near present-day Wallula and began mining operations hereabouts; this led to increased settlement and development of the area around present day Wallula as well as nearby Aberdeen and even as far north as Moses Lake. By 1870, most of what is now Thurston County had been organized into eight townships: Aberdeen, Arlington Heights, Bellevue (northwest corner), Billingsley (southwest corner), Celina (east side of Celina River), Crystal City (northwest corner of Crystal City Creek), Edmonds (east side of Edmonds River), and Everett (southwest corner). During World War II many people from throughout America worked at various military installations in or near Wallula including Boeing Air Force Base(1939-1945) which was then located about 10 miles northeast of town Limits; Grumman Aircraft Corporation's Aircraft Plant(1942-1945) which stood just east of town limits; Multnomah Paper Company's Paper Mill Complex(1944-1945) just outside townlimits across Frommer Street from United States Army Garrison Fort Belvoir; Stewart Rubber Company's Rubber Factory Complex(1948-) which stands just south west of current day milepost 5 on road less than one mile eastbound from fortifications along US Highway 395E;and BAE Systems'Electronics Manufacturing Facility located adjacent to Aberdeen University campus betweenmilepost 9 & 10 on Hwy 395E
The first white person to live in Walla Walla was George Washington and his family in 1792. The town was named for him in 1834.
