Walla Walla, Washington is a town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and home to Walla Walla College, one of the largest private universities in the United States. The name "Walla Walla" is derived from the Chinook word meaning "hundred little villages." When Captain George Vancouver explored and mapped the region in 1792–93 while on his third trip through what is now Western Washington, he discovered what would become Walla Walla River and named it after this river's hundred villages (Walla Wala means "hundred small villages"). In 1847, as part of territorial gains made by Oregon when it acquired California, wallabies were imported into Washington to be used as livestock for government purposes – a practice that continued until about 1905. In 1900-1901, General William Tecumseh Sherman led an army during his drive across Oregon into what is now Idaho Territory; he reached Puget Sound before winter stopped him near present-day Olympia. On November 15th 1901 he moved his headquarters from Portland to Seattle with 3rd Infantry Regiment US Cavalry brigade under Major General James Taggart; this event became known as Second Battle of Seattle or Sherman's Bridge Campaign because General Sherman crossed Puget Sound over Elliott Bay on December 11th 1901 while leading elements of his cavalry brigade across Elliott Bay Bridge which was then destroyed by firebombing by Japanese forces just prior to American withdrawal from World War II. Aftermath including destruction of bridge left few evidence remaining today except for a few bricks found at mudbottom near current day harbor entrance where once stood Elliott Bay Wharf - one brick remains embedded in mud bottomToday there are several float docks located along Elliot Bay waterfront providing access for boat traffic
