In 1886, a sawmill was built close to the community for processing logs brought downriver from Mount Hood National Forest near Bend, Oregon during winter months when there wasn't enough snow cover on the mountainside to produce lumber commercially viable year-round. The mill continued operations until 1957 when it closed due to competition from mills closer to Portland along Interstate 5. In 1863, Walla Wawa became one of several towns in what is now King County when the county was organized from parts of Puget Sound. The name Wa-la-wawa means "the village by the water" and referred to a bend in the river where people could gather for fishing or trade duringICE times (1893-1912). In 1907, when Congress created King County, WA, Walla Wawa became its seat. The original courthouse had been destroyed by a fire in 1906 and rebuilt at what is now MAX Park. In 1916, Congress changed Washington state's law to recognize claims by surrounding communities to land east of Siuslaw River that had been abandoned by white settlers because of lack of irrigation potential. As a result, Walla Wawa became part of new Yakima Valley Municipal District which included all present day King County except for 17 miles south on the Spokane River which remained within old Tacoma Municipality until 1959 when it too incorporated intoKing County through an act of legislature.)
