Population growth in rural areas along the Salmon River caused many businesses to close down or move to larger towns during the late 1800s throughout most of Western Washington due to competition from new arrivals with faster transportation and cheaper living costs inland. However, by 1932 small farming villages such as Wallawalla had begun to prosper because they could benefit from cheap labor drawn by improved irrigation systems being built along rivers such asthe Columbia and Snake Rivers eastward into Oregoniangrand mines such as Gold Hill on Kittitas Island producing more than $2 million worth of silver each year according to one report This increased industry led to increased demand for local goods which supported a more diversified economy that included agriculture ($12 million value), retail trade ($10 million), manufacturing ($1 billion), tourism (over $5 billion) while also contributing significantly ($525 million)to GDP statewide

In 1889, Oregon Territorial Governor John Cranch sent an army to drive out settlers in what became Walla Walla County. After five days of fighting and several civilian deaths, the Oregon militia withdrew without any combatting or capturing anyone. The first European to visit Walla Walla was Captain George Vancouver on November 14, 1792 while exploring Puget Sound for new land opportunities. He called it "Walla Wawa" which means "Island in the Woods". In 1847, Congress designated part of present-day WA as section 1023 within Spokane County for homesteaders who had left off from the original Lewis and Clark Expedition that explored Olympia country northwest of Seattle. The first permanent white settler atwallawalla (later known as Walla Walla) was James Hance who arrived there with his family in 1848 from eastern Washington Territory along with Louis Denny and others on horseback from Portland, Oregon. On February 12, 1850 Hance donated land comprising present day WA to the United States government for $5 per acre ($40 total). In 1860 construction began on a Union Pacific Railroad line between Pullman and Everett; this would eventually become one of America's most important transportation corridors. The townspeople built their first buildings around this time including a schoolhouse (1860), jail (1862), Post Office (1863), store (1864), hotel (1867-68) and Episcopal church (1902). A sawmill operated by local people until 1865 when trains took over but stopped coming because of competition from logging operations conducted by Southern Pacific Railway Company upstream near Yaquina Bay. Passenger rail service resumed in 1902 after Northern Pacific Railway acquired Southern Pacific Corporation's assets east of Tacoma but ended again due to competition from buses running down Interstate 5 south to Enumclaw during morning rush hour according to some reports During World War II much progress was made when many military installations were established including: Air Force Base Rheinhausen which housed two B-29 Superfortresses; Naval Air Station Whidbey Island which hosted Navy planes ferrying supplies ashore; Fort Canby which served as a Army post during World War I before being turned into an airfield during World War II; Camp Atterbury which housed thousands troops before they were transported away overseas On September 15th 1949 Congress passed Resolution 437 designating Mount Rainier National Park adjacent to Wahkiakum Valley as part of WA . This created Mountain Parks Commission charged with developing plans for management and protection features inside park boundaries In 1978 another major landmark happened when Suzzie Lake Dam Project opened downstream providing water Storage Capacity for King County residents displaced by Pyramid Lake Reservoir construction
The first white man to set foot on the Walla Walla Indian Reservation was George Vancouver in 1792. He and his party traveled overland from British Columbia. The area that is now Walla Walla County was part of the Yakama Nation before it was given to the Washington Territory by Congress in 1849. The first post office on the reservation was established in 1851, and the first school opened in 1865. In 1907, a dam was constructed on the Walla Walla River and created a large lake which became known as Lake Mead.
