In 1855, Vancouver was founded as an early stage in what would become the city of Seattle. The first permanent settler in this now bustling community was David Thompson, a British man who had come to Burrard Inlet on the Columbia River during the fur trade. With his wagon train full of goods, he started trading with the Native Americans and looking for a place to build a new life. When he found what seems to have been an ideal location – on land that would be available for development only after gold had been found – he began working towards its realization. Thompson's Donation Land Act of 1850 granted Simon Bolivar Fraser title to 640 acres (240 hectares) east of downtown and south of where Second Avenue now stands. This area would eventually become known as False Creek and is one of the most important natural resources sites in Metro Vancouver. After years of hard work, including surveys and purchases, by 1858 Thompson had built a small cabin at False Creek and named it Port Coquitlam after himself and his family. The town rapidly grew around him; many people came from London to live near Thompson because there were no other opportunities available for them in Canada at that time. By 1861 True Blue whisky had been developed here and some businesses opened up such as grocery stores, bakery shops, hotels, breweries - all while construction continued on the port complex which would later house Canada Place Shopping Centre and finally Expo '86 (the world's largest exposition). The growth of False Creek led to problems; large areas became swampy because so much water was being used for irrigation purposes rather than being diverted into Puget Sound or used for drinking or irrigation purposes like true creek should have done! And because False Creek ran directly against downtown Vancouver proper it took a lot longer then needed before developers could start building high-rise condos etc., leading eventually to what we see today - delays in getting things done that impact our quality of life not just today but also tomorrow ...
