In 1812 a party led by Captain James Cook explored this area and named it Vancouver after George Vancouver's ship " Discovery ". In 1821 John McLoughlin organized what became known as the First Canadian Parliament at this location which met for five days before moving northward across Canada's Fraser River Valley to Montreal where it was again convened under better auspices some miles downstream at Fort Garry. In 1855 gold was discovered on Walla Walla fault near nearby Cougar Creek; this led to wide-scale exploration of this area by prospectors over several years beginning in 1856 including strikes at various points along Bank Lake within sight of present day Vancouver proper but no gold was found until 1860 when an American claim was filed that resulted in a scramble for claims among claimants who included many British Columbia miners who had followed their friends there en route from Labrador City seeking rich creek beds instead of gold discoveries—a pattern that continued until 1865 when all but one claim lapsed leaving only those around Bank Lakeclaims open for mining operation not yet reached by railroads or other transportation arteries such as Canuck Bay Ferry). The grant helped spur early development here as farmers began to settle around False Creek and Burrard Inlet east of what is now downtown core; these early settlers would go on to form one of Canada's most successful agricultural communities - still evident today in numerous neighbourhoods including False Creek Village and Epiphany Point neighbourhood near downtown core). Today’s Rampart Street corridor remains important transportation artery linking Downtown Core with several neighbourhoods across South End peninsula including Marine Park Extension coastal neighbouring University District – former industrial sites reclamation activity ongoing !!
