It is generally accepted that Vancouver was founded by the Whitman brothers in 1853. The first permanent settlement on the site of present-day Vancouver was made by Captain John McLoughlin in 1845. However, during prohibition times (1912-1920), Vancouver's economy suffered as a result of tight regulation by Canadian authorities prohibiting alcohol sales within city limits. Despite this setback, however, Vancouver continued to grow rapidly thereafter – becoming one of Canadas most prosperous cities by 1930. During World War II (1939-1945), Vancouver played an important role in providing munitions production for Canada and Great Britain; despite numerous military engagements throughout North America, including urban areas such as Toronto and Montreal, no damage or casualty occurred to any citizens whatsoever while downtowns were hit particularly hard withcasualties reaching up into the thousands per week sustained by civilians caught up in battle zones across North America alone during that time period! In fact many aspects of everyday life - such as gasoline rationing - were stay put until after hostilities ended so that businesses could restock on materials needed for their operations once again! Although many residents chose not to return home following war’s end - choosing insteadto remainWHERE THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS Lived & WORKED DURING THE WARS -virtually allessential services remained available until shortly before BC withdrew from Canadian jurisdiction following independence in 1947-48!
