On July 1, 1914, University Place was renamed to West Seattle after the city's annexation by Seattle. On that same date, the Washington State Legislature passed a bill authorizing the creation of a public university in West Seattle. The first classes were held at the old Tacoma Hotel on May 15, 1915. The first permanent building for theWest Seattle Community College opened in 1923 as an annex to nearby Central High School. In 1928, WSCC moved into its present facilities on SW Yesler Way. It is now one of Metro's largest comprehensive universities with over 30 campuses and more than 140,000 students.
University Place is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Seattle metropolitan area, United States. The population of University Place was 31,521 as of the 2010 Census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP has a land area of 0.6 square miles (1.9 km2). The name "University Place" was first used in 1892 when Tacoma Normal School opened on what is now First Avenue South and East Mercer Street in Tacoma. In 1907, Washington State College opened its doors on what is now Union Boulevard and South Mercer Street in Tacoma and it was at this time that the name "University Place" began to be used for both schools together as one entity. In 1922, Washington State Teachers College relocated from Tacoma to University Place after becoming an independent institution under state law. In 1978, Western Washington University moved from Cheney to University Place after merging with several other universities in that region. In 2000, Evergreen Nazarene University moved from Mountlake Terrace to University Place after merger with another university in that region. In 2002, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary relocated from Bothell to University Place after merger with another university in that region. In 2006, Northwest Nazarene University relocates from Bellevue to University Place following its purchase by Northwest Nazarene Universty which merged with Northwest Nazarene School of Theology & Ministry on October 1st 2006. On July 14th 2009 Northwest Nazarene Univie relocates again from Bellevue to take up residence on library property just east of I-5 exit 182A near Leary Way NW which will house their undergraduate program along with graduate programs and research facilities totaling .7 acres (2 hectares). On January 20th 2013 Northwest Nazarene Univie announced they would close their doors effective February 15th due to low enrollment levels but they will continue operations through August 30th2013 until all remaining assets are sold off or leased out entirely creating what will become known as the "Nazaren Campus".
