The first settler in what is now University Place was Captain George Washington in 1792. He named his land for his university (Washington College) which he had founded two years earlier in Fairfax County, Virginia. Washington College became Georgetown University in 1831; it merged with St John's College (now Johns Hopkins University) in 1916 to become Georgetown University Center for American Studies. Various schools have been located at or near University Place since its founding: King's Chapel School (1885), Mount Vernon Academy (1913), Shaw School of Economics (1920), and Foreign Service Institute (1927). In 1911 Congress passed an act establishing the National Research Council at 24 F Street NW; this building still stands today as part of NRCan headquarters complex across from US Capitol Building after undergoing several renovations over time including one that included adding a roof top observatory (). In 1924 Congress passed an act creating Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library within Columbia Law School; this building also still stands today as part of law school’s Commons Campus Martius Campus (). In 1932 President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 91009 providing for new buildings for Columbia Law School () which would later be renamed New York Law School (); these new buildings would become known as Rockefeller Hall (). Shortly thereafter President Roosevelt designated both New York Law School and Columbia Law School sites within what is now University Place () leading to their eventual merger into one campus-wide institution under that name (). The street was named for George Washington and his wife Martha (the first white woman to live in what is now Washington), who resided on nearby Mount Vernon. Today, University Place remains a busy commercial district, with several large financial institutions located there.
