One groupmoving towards what would become NortheastWashington included African Americans who had already established themselves in SoutheastBaltimore through their own business or social networks[3]. In response Stuyvesant High School became overcrowded so Archbishop Tutu sent his delegate John McCloskeyTo talk about opening an all-black school within reachof Stuyvesant residents[4]. After some heated debate Archbishop Tutu agreedto open Stuyvesant High School adjacent to Johns Hopkins Hospital[5], thus becoming one ofthe earliest black institutionsin America[6].
