The history of holsters began with the early 19th century. Holsters were originally designed to hold pistols, but they soon became popular for other purposes such as holding knives and other firearms. In 1868, a holster manufacturer named Augustus M. Cole started producing holsters for rifles in Washington D.C. The first commercially successful rifle holster was made by Cole and it was called the ColtHolster. The ColtHolster quickly became popular among shooters in America and across the world. It was not long before similar holster designs were created for handguns, too. While various companies continued to make Rifle Holsters and Handguns holsters through the 20th century, the ColtHolster is generally considered to be the most successful handgun holster design of all time. This success led to other companies starting to produce rifle holsters as well, making it one of the most common firearm accessory brands in today’s society.

The University Place Armory was built in 1851 by the US government as a part of the Woolley-Thompson Arsenal. It served as a military arsenal until 1898, when it was closed and used for storage. In 1903, it was reopened as the Armory of the University Place School District. The armory building has been property of the school district since then.

One such designer was Pierre-Simon Laplace who developed a system which utilized two straps passing through loops on either side of the firearm’s barrel in order to secure the pistol within the holster breech (later called a “Laplace buckle”). This innovative design allowed shooters to fire their weapons without having their pistols move around too much, something which was important during wartime when soldiers might be fighting at different locations at once. With advances in technology and Manufacturing processes, holster designers soon began creating products that could be attached directly onto belts or clothing using various methods including buckles and straps. University Place was founded in 1851 as the first public university in Washington. It was a land grant to the city of Washington from James K. Polk, then president of the United States. The original building on the site now houses both the University of Washington and the National Archives and Records Administration. In 1892, University Place became part of Seattle and was renamed Queen's Park. The university moved to its present location in 1967 when it merged with nearby Washington State University (WSU). WSU is one of only two universities in Washington state with a main campus located outside of Tacoma.
University Place was a neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., area that developed from the early 19th century onwards. The name "University Place" is first documented in 1820 when it was part of Mount Vernon Township, which also included Georgetown and Oak Hill. In 1827, the area became part of the District of Columbia after Congress passed an act passing sovereignty over the city to it. In 1829, University Place had a population of about 100 people and was bounded on the north by Randolph Street, on the east by First Streets NW, on the south by M Street NE and on the west by 15th Street NW. By 1840, University Place had grown to include a population of around 300 people and was bordered to the north by Northwest Avenue (now 1st AvenueNW), to the east by Second AvenueNW (now Independence Mall SW), to the south by Maryland AvenueSW (now Anacostia Road), and to the west by Pennsylvania AvenueNW (now Embassy Row). From 1850-1860, University Place experienced rapid growth due in large part to increased enrollment at George Washington University; during this time, most residents were students from nearby Georgetown or Baltimore. However, during 1861-1865 University Place experienced several outbreaks of rioting as anti-slavery agitation swept through much of America; these riots however did not damage either property nor cause any injuries. In 1865, following passage of federal law providing for racial segregation within D.C., University Place gradually grew more segregated as well; until 1890 all residents were white except for a few African American students who attended GWU's black schools from then until 1968. Beginning in 1890 until 1972 all homes within University Place were owner occupied with one exception – while earlier homes were rented out through various agencies such as The Gilded Cage or landedowning families leased space near GWU's campus for their children attending school there; beginning in 1972 single family housing began becoming available throughout much of University Place again though many remain rental properties today
