The traps were originally installed outdoors but were later moved inside during World War II due to their importance in infantry training exercises conducted at nearby PT fields and other military sites.

In 1984, AFCT merged with National Rifle Association (NRA) to form America's Voice Education Foundation (AVEF). Now operates as a nonprofit organization under AVEF auspices with an emphasis on public education around firearms safety issues
