University Place is a historic district in Washington, D.C., located on the south side of Constitution Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets. University Place is a residential area in Washington, D.C., which was once the site of the University of Maryland's main campus. The northernmost blocks of University Place were developed between 1871 and 1875 by George P. Marsh, Jr., who became one of the first white men to own land in Washington. In 1881, the area was annexed by City of Washington and became part of city limits. In 1916, Harvard University moved its main campus from Cambridge, Massachusetts to south central Washington on what is now known as Howard University Boulevard. This move increased competition for space on the then-smaller university campuses and led to the development of University Place as an exclusively student-owned district that remains today. One notable resident at University Place during this time was Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz, who served as Commandant of US Naval Academy from 1940 until his death in 1945. Nimitz' widow attended college here after moving back to California following his death.
