At the time, Smith & Wesson Magazine Owners Association President Harry Hargrave said it: "made it possible for law enforcement officers throughout the United States to keep up with current police firearms technology while they apprehended criminals." Today's editor-in-chief at Smith & Wesson is Rick Beyer who stated during his induction into the company's Hall of Fame ceremonies: "I am truly honored to have been associated with this great American company from its inception through my current position as editor-in-chief." A number of other large firearm companies also published their own journals over time; these include Colt (1910), Remington (1911), Savage (.22 LR) (1920), Winchester (1900), Browning (.20 S&W) (1930s/40s), and Ruger (1929). Additionally, sport shooting publications like trap and skeet were also common at this time period. However, these magazines' popularity eventually waned due to changing public opinion on guns and ammo following World War II when gun control legislation passed federally dictated restrictions on both handguns and rifles. This district is significant for its intact row of large Corinthian capitals dating back to around 1800-1881 which remain prominent on many older properties in Washington including those adjacent to it such as Howard Street NW and New Hampshire Avenue NW

It was bounded by Pennsylvania to the east, Second to the south, and First Streets to the west. The square was used for public meetings, performances, and other events throughout its history. The University Place Square Association was formed in 1892 to manage and promote the square. In 1896, it became part of the Washington Metropolitan District Commission. In 1912, University Place Square became part of the federal government's National Mall. In 1966 it became a state-owned park with a lakeside picnic area inside it.
