University Place is a neighborhood in the city of Washington, D.C., United States. It was first developed as part of the University District and is now one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. The area has many large and small businesses, public libraries, and other services. The population of University Place was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000. The University District was created in 1884 by President James K. Polk as an enlarged portion of Georgetown (then called Georgetown Heights). The University District became a separate municipality on April 3, 1907 when Georgetown Heights incorporated as a borough within Washington County. On July 1, 1971, the University District lost its autonomy and became part of the newly formed Washington City government under Mayor Marion Barry. In 1972, university employees moved from their old buildings at 4th and K Streets NW into new housing on Navy Yard Road NE which then became known as "University Place". That year also saw the opening of UPNW's main campus building at 801 New York Avenue NW which replaced what had been central campus for students at WNU since 1915. Today that building houses both UPNW's School of Business Administration and its School of Arts & Sciences while stillserving as home to WNU's administrative offices including those for student financial Aid (FAA) and Student Life (SLC). In 1984-85 renovations were undertaken to make use of available funds from Proposition 98 which increased property values around NorthwestWashington by 50%. One result was that much ground floor real estate adjacent to New York AveNW changed hands for over $500 per square foot between 1984-1987 – making it one of only two neighborhoods in D.C., along with Arlington Heights IL where property values went up more than 500%. This period also saw construction begin on much needed widening sidewalks located near New York AveNW between Connecticut Avenue NW & Massachusetts Avenue NW – giving University Place once again some degree level pedestrian accessibility without having to cross busy streets like Pennsylvania Avenue or Union Station! It should be noted that during this time there were several high profile arrests/incidents taking place around here such as famed graffiti writer Banksy who purportedly graffitied "Death Is A Bourgeois Vice" outside Ofco Drugstore just southbound on New York Ave next door to WNU during spring 2007 semester; rap artist Ludacris who visited UMBCLaw enforcement headquarters shortly before his arrest on December 7th 2005 after leading them on a dramatic chase through downtown DC resulting in numerous injuries; [and] then later that night nearly two dozen people were arrested after demonstrating against wars abroad at Randolph Park across Constitution Bridge from UPNW’s main Campus building….overall these events helped give university place some notoriety amongst locals but ultimately did not cause any significant decrease or displacement in its population
