The University Place area in Washington was once home to a bustling gun culture. In 1882, University Place was the site of a gun show. The show was organized by Professor George Washington Carver and his students in order to demonstrate their knowledge of agriculture. In 1894, the first university rifle team won an exhibition game against a team from Yale. In 1907, there were two shootings on campus: one at the Aryan Club and another at McNary Hall. No injuries occurred in either shooting. In 1916, there was an attempted bombing on campus: a bomb exploded near the Student Union but no casualties resulted. University Place is a busy commercial district in Washington, D.C., located on the northwest side of the city block bounded by 14th Street to the north, Constitution Avenue to the east, and University Circle to the south. The area was once part of Georgetown but has been growing rapidly in recent decades as an educational and research community. Today, University Place is home to a variety of businesses, including academic institutions such as Georgetown University and American University, as well as government agencies and large corporations. It also contains several high-end residences and hotels, making it one of the most popular areas in town. The first inhabitants of what is now University Place were Native Americans who lived near present-day Anacostia River. In 1790, when Georgetown was founded as a college town by George Washington, Congress voted to allot land for an academy at this location. The Academy opened in 1796 and soon became known as Georgetown College. In 1810 President James K. Polk established Washington National Military Park on land adjacent to today's University Circle with the goal of providing a site for military training for future U.S.-led conflicts. In 1834 Trinity Church was built on property that now forms part of today's Market Square off Constitution Avenue; it served as both a parish church (known until 1892) and university chapel from its inception until it closed in 1971 following Vatican City's takeover of Rome's Holy See that year). A similar building called Union Chapel (dedicated 1850) stood on nearby First Street between 14th and 15th Streets before being demolished in 1865 because of lack of space at that corner spot for religious services within easy reach of students at other colleges or universities—a restriction that still applies today to some degree sites across Northwest Washington!
