In order to make room for students, faculty members, and infrastructure necessary for academic excellence, Stephenson decided to build a second campus on adjacent property – which he named after himself: George Stephenson Hall (now known as the UW Campus). This new campus boasted two main buildings: The Nicholas-Jacques Building (later renamedisible as Burrall Hall) housed classrooms and laboratories while also serving as the administrative heart of University Place; and The John Marshall Building (later renamedvisible as Regent Courts) housed all of the town's businesses including stores, taverns, inns etcetera. Although these structures were impressive bytoday's standards – they were at least partially demolished in 1954 when construction on Regent Courts began – they remain largely responsible for shaping both University Place into today’s vibrant communityscape. On University Place, Washington history begins with the arrival of the first group of settlers in 1792. The land that now makes up University Place was part of a tract granted to John Adams by King George III. The first house on the site was built by Captain James Kintyre in 1793. By 1811, the town had grown enough to require a school, and in 1816, Congress passed an act giving Washington College (later Washington State College) its present location.
