When Baltimore closed its gates to American citizens on April 14th, 1815, these students were forced to leave their homes and move into what is now known as Georgetown due to lack of space at the college itself. However, not all these students found success; some managed only short-term stays before returning home or moving on to other opportunities within America while others left for good after completing their studies at Georgetown. In 1849, following accusations that Congress was using money meant for education instead for military purposes – specifically towards building a canal through Washington – President James K Polk ordered that all federal lands east of Potomac River be surveyed and opened up for development by private individuals if they could provide assurances that they would use their land exclusively for education rather than military use (the so-called “ clearer water policy”). As a result of this order, much land between Washingtons Anacostia River and Howard Street was purchased by members of Congress from private individuals who promised not to sell it off again until such time as an agreement could be made with President Polk about how schools should be conducted on these parcels (the school district boundaries still follow this route today). Shortly thereafter various colleges began leasing or purchasing additional property near where later Yorktown Naval Air Station would eventually stand; this included land east of Pennsylvania Avenue NW which became known as Campus Point because it housed most academic buildings used by George Washington University (GWU) until its move away from Dupont Circle into its current location across Constitution Mall in 1949. It should also be noted that GWU never actually relocated from Dupont Circle; instead it continued functioning as a separate institution down around 12th Street NW until 1959 when it merged with GWU proper to form one large university under one roof! From then on things changed significantly at GWU - although much smaller classes were held indoors throughout the 1960s thanks largely to renovations funded primarily by donations from alumni/ friends!), student activism soon became more prominence than ever before among both faculty members and staff alike!
