Tumwater is a small town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,075 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tumwater" is probably derived from the Chinook language word "tʰaɪmwærō", meaning 'the place where good salmon run'. A post office called Tumwater was established in 1873, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. The first European to visit Tumwater was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around Asia in 1792. On July 10, 1814 (date unknown), Nathaniel Banks founded what would become Portland on the west side of Tumwater River. In 1836, John McLoughlin built a flour mill here and named it after himself as he began explorations that led to his discovery of Oregon Country. The townspeople began to arrive in numbers during the Gold Rush of 1880-1881; however, there were no permanent residents until 1886 when Jepson Adair arrived with his brother General William Cushing and started trading posts along the Snake River near present-day Vail Pass The first store building in Tumwater was erected by Wm Halsey & Bros., corner First and Main Streets about 1865 In 1907 Jepson Adair donated land for development which became known as Northwest School Park In 1932 an election resulted in incorporation of Tumwater into the City of Bendigo

Tumwater is a city in the U.S. state of Washington, located on the Snake River. The population was 24,624 at the 2010 census.[1] It is the county seat of Thurston County and part of Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Tumwater" comes from Chinook Jargon meaning "place where water flows quickly." The first white person to set foot in what would become Tumwater was David Thompson on July 14, 1821 while exploring the mouth of the Columbia River. He named it after his native village of Thames in England. After years of exploration by other surveyors, including James K. Polk and George Washington Elliott, Tumwater finally obtained federal recognition as a town on December 5, 1847 when General James Kapp submitted its plat to Congress under title 4th Executive Order No. 912.[2][3] The first post office was established at Tumwater on January 15, 1848,[4] and remained so until November 10, 1907 when it opened at Olympia with an outpost at Weiser[5]. On that date it became a city.[6] In 1902 steel magnate Andrew Carnegie donated land to build what would become CenturyLink Field; initial plans called for a stadium only for football but later plans evolved to include baseball as well[7]. The stadium opened in 1999 and has been home to both American Football (NFL) and Baseball (MLB) teams since its construction. In 2002 Microsoft released Windows 98 British Edition which included built-in support for an Indian reservation near downtown Tacoma,[8] which contributed significantly to Tumwater's growth over the next decade[9][10]. During this time there also appeared some redevelopment around Northeast 142nd Street between First Avenue North and Interstate 90/Upper Main Street; this area now contains several restaurants, bars & businesses such as King's School [11], Northwest Lumber [12], Eastside IT Solutions [13], among others.
