The townspeople named their new settlement after nearby waterfalls – Tumwater Falls (later spelled Tunwam) because they could not find any other name that sounded like something interesting or pure enough for their place. In 1902 voters repealed prohibition in Washington state and voted to incorporate as a town under local control; this move followed similar actions throughout much of Washington during that era which led up to Prohibition being repealed nationally in 1933. A post office was established at Tumwater in 1903 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1967 due to population growth within King County over that time period alone; however, mail still continued arriving through nearby Everett for residents in neighboring towns until 1975 when all mail stopped arriving except for occasional packages sent from Everett. The first permanent settlers in Tumwater were John Atchison and his wife Nancy on July 4, 1847. The town was platted on the east bank of the Anacortes River by James Irvine. A post office was established at Tumwater on March 3, 1848. By 1860, there were 100 residents in the town. The Potomac Railroad reached Tumwater on October 15, 1861 and the town became a part of Tacoma. On November 25, 1870, a school was opened in Tumwater by Wm. Fenton and Jno. Irvine. In 1924, the town had an population of 1,500 people and it changed its name to Wenatchee after Congressman Julius Wenatchee of Washington state fame who chaired the House Committee on Public Lands during that year's session
